About Somatics sessions

When you come for your first session we will go through your case history so I can get a clear picture of your health history and the problems you are dealing with.

It is very common for people to have tried other treatments that have failed to work long term.

People often come to their first Somatic Education session feeling somewhat sceptical. Many will have been assured by different therapists in the past that their problems will be resolved, only to find that after spending lots of time and money, that their problems still persist.

The number one question people ask when coming for the first time is “will it work for me?” I asked myself this very same question. The good news is that for over 90% of people Somatic Education works long term.

After we have been through your case history I will do an assessment, which focuses on your posture, analyses different movement patterns and gauges the level of muscular contraction you have in key areas of the body.

Once the initial assessment has been completed, we will work together through a series of slow, safe and gentle movements that will to be tailored to your specific needs.

Rather than me “treating you” or ‘fixing you’ I will work with you in re-educating the part of the brain that controls the muscular system and teach you how to do movements that achieve this.

During the hands on part of the session I will help you to become more aware of the muscles involved in the movements by using just the right amount of pressure and touch to guide and support you. By providing you with sensory feedback I will enable you to become more aware of the muscles that are holding tension and as a result you will be able to release them more easily.

Essentially Somatic Education is “brain work” rather than “body work” and is an educational process. You play an active part during the sessions, rather than being a passive participant. Each movement that I will guide you through, is designed to release chronically contracted muscle groups and lengthen them back to their natural state.

Clients tend to learn at different speeds depending on their ability to sense what is happening and perform the movements. Some pick it up straight away, while others take a bit longer to sense and perform the movements correctly.

During this process you will be able to sense and feel muscles much more clearly; feel pain and tension releasing and experience greater flexibility and range of motion.

At the end of the session I will teach you a brief series of movement patterns that you can do at home for between 10-15 minutes a day that will maximise the benefits of the session. These exercises will help maintain the improvements you have gained from the session and stop you from going back into your old habitual patterns.

Regular sessions after the first one, begin with a quick discussion and assessment of how you have been progressing. Subsequent sessions continue in a similar fashion to the first, with continual assessment of your progression. By the end of the process, you will have learned a series of movements personally tailored to your needs. You will be able to use this series of movements use for the rest of your life to maintain your health and prevent your problems reoccurring.
