How Somatic Education changed my life Growing up I was always one of the tallest kids in school and from about the age of 12 started getting back pain. I clearly remember standing in assembly and continuously shifting my weight from one side to the other to try and get relief from the pain in my back. Throughout my teenage years my back pain continued and I gave up playing all of the sports that I had enjoyed when I was younger (tennis, football and mountain biking). In my late teens I started working and found that jobs where I would have to stand up all day would leave me in agony by the end of the day. What followed was years of searching to find a long term solution. After trying just about every kind of bodywork and therapy I could find, I was left feeling in the dark about the cause of my back problems. This lead to a period of trying other ways to get to the bottom of the problem. I tried all sorts of things, including various different stretching and strengthening exercises, weight training, yoga, swimming and martial arts. During my early twenties the pain and stiffness in my back was affecting my life both physically and mentally and I was constantly tired, stressed and miserable. Working became a huge struggle and I spend most evenings and weekends recovering from the fatigue and pain I was experiencing. My life and career was being so affected and I couldn’t understand why I was having so many problems at such young age. Most people I knew where going out and having fun, whereas I was feeling handicapped and about 80 years old. I was told again and again “it’s because you are tall” “its because you have a long back’ “its because your back in weak and needs strengthening”. None of this helped at all. I remember thinking I would suffer from back pain for the rest of my life and how helpless I felt. One day while searching the internet again for information relating to back pain, I found something called ‘Somatic Education’ I started doing some research into it and the more I read the more I realised that it might be the answer to my problems. I phoned up a practitioner whose story was similar to mine and who had completely resolved his back pain through Somatic Education. So I went to see him, hopeful, but sceptical as always. In one session my back felt better than it had in years! The muscles in my back, which had felt like tight steel cables for many years were suddenly released. The relief was massive and I remember walking down the road feeling like I had been set free. My back continued to improve as I practiced the exercises and had more sessions. Unlike other therapies and treatments I had tried, my back continued to remain pain free and flexible long term. I was so blown away by finally finding something that helped resolve my back problems long term that I decided to train as a practitioner. I studied in Dublin under Brian Ingle, founder of the institute for Somatic Movement Education. Somatic Education has changed my life. I have walked the road of having chronic back pain for many years and know how frustrating it can be and how helpless it makes you feel. I am hugely passionate about Somatics and know how effective it is in resolving chronic pain.
