The method I’m referring to is called 'Somatic Education'. 'Somatic' comes from the Greek word ‘soma’ that means ‘living body'. The practice of Somatic Education involves a series of gentle, hands-on movements and an at home self-care exercise program that produces an immediate relaxation response in your muscles.

These subtle movements help you to regain control of muscles that are tight, sore and uncoordinated and return them to their natural state where they are  relaxed.

As your muscles relax, pain disappears and the flexibility you once had returns. At the same time your posture will improve, because your muscles are no longer causing you to unconsciously shift your body to compensate.

Most of us living today experience a lot of stress in our daily lives and this stress often triggers contractions in our muscles. Injury and trauma are also primary triggers for us to tense up. We might tighten a certain muscle group - without even realizing it - and hold that for so long that our brain actually forgets how to release the tension.

Over time this muscle tension becomes ingrained and our brains lose the ability to voluntarily release the tension.  Unfortunately, pain and muscle fatigue becomes a permanent part of our lives too, along with stiffness and lack of flexibility, that frequently accompany muscle tension.

The gentle, hands-on movements that are part of Somatic Education target the problem areas and remind the brain of the muscle tension and cause it to release the muscles back to their normal, relaxed level.

Rather than using the techniques of stretching, strengthening or manipulation, Somatic Education works by retraining the brain to make changes from within. The brain is the control centre for the muscular system and by retraining it to release tension, profound changes to the function of the body occur. Chronic pain and stiffness that may have been a problem for years may often release immediately.

Somatic Education isn’t a ‘quick fix’, but a process you can learn and use for a lifetime. Instead of being a passive recipient, you take part in an interactive process that teaches you skills. It gets to the core of the problem and ends pain quickly, while empowering you to be able to stop chronic pain re-occuring.

I know from personal experience how effective Somatic Education is, because from the age of 12 I suffered continuously from back pain. I clearly remember standing in assembly at school, shifting my weight from side to side to try and get relief from the pain. Sitting or standing for a long time was often unbearable. The pain was so bad that I had to give up my favorite activities, tennis, football and mountain biking.

For years I sought solutions in all the ‘right’ places and went to just about every specialist and body worker I could find, to try and get to the bottom of the problem. I even had an MRI scan, which found no structural problems with my back.

Over the years I tried everything, including stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, weight training, yoga, swimming and even martial arts. Nothing worked. I got to the point where the pain and stiffness in my back was ruining my career and my life.

During the working week I struggled to get by and the weekends were spent trying to recover from the physical and mental strain of it all. I had almost given up trying to find something to resolve the pain...
